Abstract

  Background and purposes: Because of huge growth of snack food industry in the last few years the nation’s eating habits are undergoing major transformation with a replacement of traditional main meals by more frequent snacking. Dietary changes have been notable in children and particularly students so they are the major consumers of these foods. The aim of this study was to evaluate the snack and sweet drinks consumption at school times and its relationship with first molar cavities level in a group of students .

  Methods: The study was carried out in a group of 400, 8-12 year-old boy students in Area 5 Tabriz school. Data were collected through simple examination and questionnaire completed by a interveiwer. Findings were analyzed with descriptive statistic methods and chi-square Test .

  Results: The findings showed that nearly all the students (91%) had one or more snack or sweet drinks at school time. Biscuits, dried berries and raisins and packed fruit juice were the most popular. First molar cavities as expressed in DMFT increased significantly with high intake of snacks.

  Conclusion: Snack and sweet drinks consumption is high among Tabriz students, and first molar cavities level is increased with high snacks intakes.

Abstract

  Background & Objective: Hyperlipidemia is one of the main causes of cardiovascular diseases which have a high mortality throughout the world. Consumption of products containing specific strains of microbes as probiotics, produces positive effects in the host by balancing the flora of the digestive system. L.casei is a probiotic and the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of consumption of milk containing L.casei on serum lipid profile of rats fed high lipid diet.

  Methods : This was an experimental study in which 30 male albino wistar rats with a body weight of 200 ± 15 gr were randomly allocated to two groups of treatment and control each containing 15 rats and adapted to a high lipid diet (11.47%) and water containing milk (25%). Rats in both groups received high lipid diet and water containing 25% milk for 48 days with the difference that rats in the treatment group received water containing L.casei considering that water consumption is created throughout the experiment, the amount of L.casei added to milk was calculated to each rat consumed 109 CFU bacteria per day.

  Results : Independent t-test revealed that at a level of α= 0/05 mean levels of total cholesterol and LDL-C of rats in the treatment group was significantly lower than that of control group (p<0/05), but the mean levels of triglyceride, HDL-C and VLDL-C was not significant. Also increase in body weight was significantly higher in the treatment group compared to the control group (p<0/01).

  Conclusion : Long term daily consumption of milk containing L.casei improve serum lipid profile by lowering total cholesterol level and also increase the rate of body growth.

Abstract

  Background & Objectives: Adherence to a diabetic diet is one of the most important aspects of diabetes management. Compliance with a diabetic diet has usually been described in terms of total intake. We examined indexes of the use of specific foods that would normally be either recommended or prohibited by Food Frequency Questionnaire.

  Methods: In order to study the dietary habits of the patients with type II diabetes 228 outpatients with type II diabetes referring to Ardabil Diabetic Clinic were randomly selected.

  Results : A common diabetic diet was reported by 87.8% of women (N = 115) and 77.1 % of men (N = 74). The dietary habits of the patients showed their awareness of limiting use of simple sugars. Use of foods with high simple sugars (e.g.: honey, jam, soft drink) were low among the patients. Potato was consumed by 58.8% of the female and 74.2% of the male, and of 43.8% of the subjects used mulberry with tea.

  Conclusions: Our result showed that there should be a greater focus on counseling, education and improving dietary of patients with diabetes.

Abstract

  Background & Objectives: The aim of the present study was to evaluate the protective effects of Crocin on rat high fat diet-induced hepatic steatosis model.

  Methods: For this purpose, male rats were given either standard diet as control, high fat diet for induction of hepatic steatosis and high fat diet plus Crocin through gavage at different doses (25, 50 and 100 mg kg-1/day) for protection of liver steatosis, at a period of 4 weeks in different experimental groups and compared considering serum lipid profile, serum biomarkers of liver tissue injury, hepatic antioxidant activity and liver histopathological changes. The serum levels of triglyceride, total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein, very low-density lipoprotein, high-density lipoprotein for determination of deleterious metabolic effects, alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase for determination of hepatocyte injury, alkaline phosphatase, bilirubin for assessment of biliary function, malondialdehyde and reduced glutathione content for assessment of liver free radical activity, the enzymatic activities of glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase and catalase as indicators of antioxidation in liver tissue, were measured. Finally, the biochemical findings were matched with histopathological verifications.

  Results: After 4 weeks, high fat diet caused deleterious metabolic effects, including hypertriglyceridemia, hypercholesterolemia and liver dysfunction. Rats fed high fat diet alone showed increased activities of hepatocellular enzymes in plasma, significant decline in antioxidants, and elevated lipid peroxidation indices in liver. Crocin treatment significantly reduced elevated markers of liver tissue injury and malondialdehyde , and brought back the liver antioxidants and the over accumulation lipids in serum towards normal. Histopathology of the liver confirmed the changes induced by high fat diet and the heptoprotective effect of Crocin.

  Conclusions: Crocin exerts protective effects against hepatic steatosis in rats fed with high fat diet possibly through its antioxidant actions.

Abstract

  Background & Objectives: Food consumption for its hedonic properties can result in caloric intake exceeding requirements and is considered as a major culprit in the rapidly increasing rate of obesity. We compared the dietary patterns and the hedonic questionnaire score in obese and non-obese women. We also investigated the relation between the score of this questionnaire and variety of food items.

  Methods: This case-control study was conducted on 140 women aged 17-44 years that had referred to obesity club at district 4 of Tehran in 2011. Food intake and hedonic score were determined using validated semi-quantitative 168-item food frequency questionnaire and 21-item hedonic questionnaire, respectively. Logistic regression was used to determine the association between obesity and the dietary patterns identified by factor analysis and hedonic hunger score.

  Results: Two dietary patterns were identified as healthy and unhealthy patterns. The adjusted odds ratio of obesity didn’t show any significant trend in none of the dietary patterns. The mean hedonic questionnaire score was higher in case than control group, significantly (p<0.05). The adjusted odds ratio of obesity, for the second and the third tertiles of this questionnaire versus the first tertile of this, was 2.8 and 10.8, respectively (p<0.05).

  Conclusion: This study shows that there is no difference between the dietary patterns of obese and nonobese women while there is a positive association between hedonic hunger and obesity. It seems that hedonic hunger may lead the obese women to consume unhealthy food choices.

Abstract

Background & Objectives: Obesity is associated with metabolic abnormalities such as insulin resistance. Weight loss is always recommended for meaningful reduction in these abnormalities. Therefore, we examined the effects of balanced low calorie diet on weight loss, fasting insulin and insulin resistance in obese women attending the nutrition clinic.

Methods: In this clinical trial, forty five volunteer apparently healthy obese women (body mass index: 33.28 ± 2.90 kg/m2 and age: 28.40 ± 7.98 years) were recruited from the nutrition clinic in their first visit. The participants were received a balanced low calorie diet over 6 months after anthropometry measurement and blood sampling for determination of fasting insulin and insulin resistance level. Balanced low calorie diet was an individualized diet with an energy deficit of 500 calories of daily energy intake that was calculated from 3-day food records for every person. At 6 months after intervention, continuous and dichotomous variables were assessed using paired t-test and McNemar test, respectively.

Results: The mean recommended energy intake was 2241.78 ± 219.02(kcal). After 6 months, there were significant reductions in body weight (p=0.003), body mass index (p=0.005), waist and hip circumferences (p<0.001 and p<0.001, respectively). There was also significant improvement in fasting insulin level (13.47 ± 6.55 vs. 11.95 ± 4.17 µU/ml, p=0.01). Whereas, insulin resistance had not significant reduction (p=0.1).

Conclusion: In obese women attending the nutrition clinic, the balanced low calorie diet resulted in weight loss and improvement in fasting insulin. These positive changes can help to decrease the risk factor profile in obese individuals.

Abstract

Background & objective: Aloe-vera is an herb   that has long been used in traditional medicine. Using high-fat diet and fatty liver disorder cause obesity and hyperlipidemia. So, this study aimed to investigate the effects of Aloe - vera gel extract on the body weight and lipid profile in adult male rats treated with high-fat diet.
Methods: In this experimental study, 40 adult male rats were included in the control group (no treatment), sham group (treated with high-fat diet 10 ml/kg) and three experimental groups receiving high-fat diet (10ml/kg) along with 150, 300 and 600 mg/kg Aloe- vera gel extracts. Prescriptions were conducted by gavage, for 60 days. At the end, after anesthetizing the rats and phlebotomizing their heart, the serum levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL and HDL were measured.   The obtained results were analyzed by ANOVA and Duncan tests.
Results: The results showed that high-fat diet significantly increased the serum levels of cholesterol, triglycerides, LDL (p<0.001) and weight gain (p<0.01) but had no significant effect on the serum level of HDL. However, in the groups receiving Aloe -vera gel and   high-fat diet, there was a significant decrease in the weight and serum levels of cholesterol, triglyceride (p<0.05) and LDL (p<0.01).
Conclusion: High-fat diets increase the weight and serums levels of triglycerides, LDL and cholesterol.  Also, the Aloe- vera gel extract causes weight loss and improves lipid profiles in the rats treated with Aloe -vera gel extract.

Abstract

 
Background & objectives: The aim of the present study was to evaluate 8 weeks individualized balanced low calorie diet on anthropometric measurements in apparently healthy obese women.
Methods: Forty apparently healthy obese women (age: 18-40 years and 27.5≤BMI≤40 kg/m2) were recruited from the nutrition clinic in Ardabil city. The participants received a balanced low calorie diet after anthropometric measurements. Paired T-test was used to compare the changes during 8 - week intervention.
Results: Individualized balanced low calorie diet resulted in a significant decrease in body weight (-3.99±0.34 kg, p<0.001), body mass index (-1.61±0.14 kg/m2, p<0.001), waist circumference (-2.91±0.32 cm, p<0.001), hip circumference (-1.89±0.37 cm, p<0.001), waist to hip ratio (-0.01±0.004, p=0.001), waist to stature ratio (-0.02±0.002, p<0.001), body adiposity index (-0.97±0.15%, p<0.001), abdominal volume index (-1.07±0.11, p<0.001) and conicity index (-0.007±0.002, p=0.001) during 8 weeks.
Conclusion: Based on the results, an individualized balanced low calorie diet induced weight loss and decreased other anthropometric measurements during 8 weeks. Balanced low calorie diet-induced moderate weight loss alone can be a good way to reduce metabolic risk factors in obese women. .

Abstract

 
Background & objectives: Considering the high prevalence of body image dissatisfaction and its consequences, it is necessary to consider effective interventions to reduce it. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of a balanced low calorie diet (BLCD) and slight weight loss on the body image score and its subscales.
Methods: In this clinical trial, 74 apparently healthy, non-pregnant, non-lactating and non-menopausal women (age range: 18-49 years with body mass index range: 27.5-40 kg/m2) were selected using random sampling method from a nutrition clinic in their first visit in Ardabil city between November 2019 and February 2020. Data collection was done by Anthropometric measurements and multidimensional body self-relations questionnaire. The paired T-test was used to compare the changes during 4 - week balanced low calorie diet intervention. BLCD was an individualized diet with an energy deficit of 500 calories of daily energy intake that was calculated from 3-day food records for every person.
Results: After 4 weeks, BLCD resulted in a significant decrease in body weight (p=0.001), body mass index (p=0.001), waist circumference (p=0.002), waist to height ratio (p=0.012), abdominal volume index (p=0.009) and conicity index (p=0.045) and a significant increase in the subscale scores of fitness evaluation (p=0.01), health orientation (p=0.03), body area satisfaction (p=0.01) and overweight preoccupation (p=0.001).
Conclusion: According to the results, it seems that even slight weight loss with a balanced low-calorie diet can be effective in improving anthropometric indices and some subscales of body image in 4 weeks. These results support the effectiveness of short-term interventions.

Abstract

Background: Many scientific Researches have shown that diethylnitrosamine, which is used to induce liver carcinoma, has destructive effects on the kidney. Menthol is a monoterpene type with antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer effects. In the current study, we investigated the effect of menthol on the expression of tumor-related factors and HIF-1α/VEGF signaling in the kidney cells of mice receiving diethylnitrosamine.
Methods: In this research, 16 male mice at the age of 14 days were divided into four groups including Control, Menthol, Nitrosamine, and Nitrosamine-Menthol groups. Nitrosamine and Nitrosamine-Menthol groups received diethyl-nitrosamine intraperitoneally (25 mg/kg) at the age of 14 days. Menthol and Nitrosamine-Menthol groups also received menthol by gavage (50 mg/kg) three times a week for 6 consecutive months. At the end of this period, the expression level of SFRP1, VHL, CTNNB1, HIF-1α, and VEGF in the kidney cells was measured using real-time PCR method.
Results: Menthol treatment caused a significant increase in the expression level of SFRP1 (P=0.021) and VHL (P=0.013) and a significant decrease in the expression level of CTNNB1 (P=0.001), HIF-1α (P=0.000) and VEGF (P=0.000) in the kidney cells of Nitrosamine-Menthol treated group compared to the Nitrosamine group.
Conclusion: The results of this study showed that menthol prevents the decrease in the expression of tumor suppressor factors and the increase in the expression of tumor stimulating factors and factors effective in angiogenesis in the kidney of mice treated with diethyl-nitrosamine, so menthol is probably useful in prevention and treatment of renal cancer.
