Abstract

Hydatic cyst is caused by Echinococus worm, that involves any part of the body, sometimes it is presented in organs such as thyroid, breast and other organs. Axillary that may be consider adenopathy or metastasis and do biopsy, which so there is danger of leakage, anaphylaxis or relaps.

The reported case was 39 years old female presented with painless axillary mass without inflammation since 19 years ago that slowly enlarged. Physical findings suggested hydatid cyst which was confirmed with ultrasonography and IHA for Echinococus granolosus and other diseases ruled out. She was operated and she had no relapses after 1.5 years follow up.

Abstract

Background & Objectives: Diabetes mellitus may be associated with the imbalance between protective effect of antioxidants and increased free radical production with regard to discrepancies of the findings in previous researches the present study set out to determine the changes of plasma malondialdehyde and erythrocyte antioxidant superoxide dismutase activity in patients with type II diabetes mellitus.

Methods: This case-control study was conducted in 2005 using random sampling. 38 patients with type II diabetes mellitus who referred to 5th Azar diabetes center and 19 age and sex matched healthy controls were selected for this study. Heparinated blood samples were taken from the cases. The separated plasma was tested for blood sugar, lipid peroxidation and blood cells (for glycolisated Hb and superoxide dismutase enzyme activity). The collected data were analyzed by SPSS (ver. 10) using t-test.

Results: The level of plasma malondialdehyde from type II diabetes mellitus patients (6.27±0.80 nmol/ml) was significantly different from that in control group (3.56±0.98 nmol/ml)(p<0.05). Erythrocyte superoxide dismutase activity from type II diabetes mellitus patients (678.78±59.36 U/gr Hb) was significantly lower than control group (1056.47±52.98 U/gr Hb) (p<0.05).

Conclusion: The significant difference between the increase in malondialdehyde and decrease in the activity of antioxidant enzymes in patients with type II diabetes mellitus may predispose to the development of serious complications leading to cellular damage. This suggest that diabetic patients may need more antioxidants than normal. Supplementation with medical or non-medical free radical scavengers such as vitamins E and C or foods untaining vitamin C (sitrus fruits) have a potential role in reinforcing antioxidant defence and can be important in diabetic patients.

Abstract

Background and Objectives: A great amount of evidence shows that Oxidative stress is high among hemodialysis patients. The purpose of present investigation is examination of the effect of zinc supplementation on improvement of oxidative stress in chronic hemodialysis patients.

Methods: In this double blind clinical trial 65 chronic hemodialysis patients were studied in two groups Group one (35 patients) received placebo and group two (30 patients) received 100 mg elemental zinc (as zinc sulfate) daily for 2 months. The placebo and supplement discontinued in next 2 months. Then, the study continued for two other months in the cross-over from. The levels of serum zinc, total glutathione, malondialdehyde (MDA), total serum antioxidant capacity and the activity of whole blood superoxide dismutase (SOD) were determined on 0th, 60th,120th,180th days, in fasting, predialysis samples. Food record was recorded for one day prior to dialysis in above-mentioned days and their dietary zinc was assessed.

Results: Basal serum zinc levels in both groups were below 80 μ g/dl. The zinc upplementation led to significant increase in the levels of serum zinc in both groups .The levels of serum total antioxidant capacity, total glutathione and activity of whole blood SOD increased significantly during zinc supplementation period. The concentrations of serum MDA decreased significantly in zinc supplementation period in both groups. During the placebo period the levels of MDA in first group increased significantly, whereas the concentration of glutathione in second group decreased significantly. The body mass index (BMI) values did not change significantly during the study.

Conclusion: It can be concluded that in patients undergoing hemodialysis the oxidative stress enhanced during nonsupplementation period (zinc sulfate). Low serum zinc levels are improved by zinc administration and zinc supplementation improves oxidative stress.

Abstract

Background & Objectives : Piracetam is a nootropic compound, which acts as a nervous system enhancer. Different processes are involved in memory formation and various parameters are able to disturb it. Due to increase of exposure possibility to electromagnetic fields in recent years and the effects of theses fields on memory consolidation, this investigation designed to clear the relation between these parameters and memory consolidation.

Methods: In this research eleven groups of male wistar rats (ten rats in each group) with a mean weight of 275±25 gr aging 3-4 months were studied. To evaluate the effects of electromagnetic field, four groups of rats were exposed to 5mT/50HZ electromagnetic field for 1,4,6 and 8 hours respectively immediately after training. In other six groups 250mg/kg or 500 mg/kg piracetam were administered orally one hour before training. They were also exposed to electromagnetic field for 4,6,8 hours respectively immediately after training,. Retrieval test was performed 24 hours later in all groups.

Results: 1 hour exposure on EMF had no meaningful effect on memory consolidation, however, in other three groups the electromagnetic fields impaired memory consolidation significantly compared to the control group (p<0.05). Piracetam administration with two mentioned doses significantly improved memory consolidation (p<0.05).

Conclusions: Acute exposure to low intensity magnetic field can disturb memory consolidation and piracetam administration can prevent it.

Abstract

Hydatid cyst disease is a zoonosis disease that is common in both humans and animals. Humans acquire echinococcosis by ingesting viable parasite eggs with their food. The hydatid cyst tend to be in the liver (50-70% of patients) or lung (20-30% patients) but may be found in any other organs of the body, including brain, heart, and bones (less than 10%). Symptoms are often absent, and in many cases infection is detected only incidentally by imaging studies.
This paper presents a case of hydatid cyst who admitted with non specific symptoms such as blotting, recurrent constipation and abdominal distention. Abdominal CT of the patient found low density mass in the right side of abdomen (in small bowel mesentery), without involvement
of the liver, kidney, spleen, and pancreas. The patient candidated for resolution of cyst with lapratomic style. And in operative laparatomy a typical hydatid cyst was found and confirmed by pathology and similar reports were not found by the author regarding the literature.

Abstract

Background & Objective: Visceral leishmaniasis (kala-azar) is an infectious-parasitic disease occurring sporadically in various parts of Iran. The disease is endemic in Ardabil, East Azarbaijan, Bushehr and Fars provinces. This study was performed with the aim of evaluation and comparison of direct agglutination test (DAT), indirect immunofluorescent antibody (IFAT) and ELISA in sero-diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis that is following a seroepidemiological survey in Germi district of Ardabil province.
Methods: Cluster sampling has been performed from ≤12 years old and 10% of the adult population in Germi district. Altogether 1155 blood specimens were collected to detect anti- Leishmania antibodies. The samples were tested by direct agglutination test (DAT), indirect immunofluorescent antibody (IFAT) and ELISA methods.
Results: 32 (2.8%) of the collected specimens have anti-Leishmania antibodies with titers ≥1:800 and from total specimens 7 (0.6%) were positive with ≥1:3200 titers. In IFA test 32 (2.8%) have titers ≥1:40 and from total specimens 6 (0.52%) were positive with ≥1:320 titers. In ELISA test 8 specimens were positive and other specimens were negative.
Conclusions: According to the results of this study, IFAT and ELISA are specific and high sensitive tests for sero-diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis but these methods are expensive and require the complicated tools. Whereas, DAT is a simple method, not expensive and require a simple local laboratory with one or two trained technicians. Therefore DAT could be used for seroepidemiological studies and sero-diagnosis of visceral leishmaniasis in endemic areas instead of IFA and ELISA methods.

Abstract

Background & Objectives : One of the first steps in diagnosis of pleural effusion is distinction between exudative and transudative types. The aim of this study was to assess C – reactive protein (CRP) level as one of the diagnostic marker for differentiation of exudative from transudative pleural effusions.

Methods : In this descriptive and sectional study, 80 patients with confirmed pleural effusion were assessed. These patients were divided into two groups based on Light´s criteria. Serum and pleural CRP were measured with Latex Agglutination Test.

Results : Out of 80 patients with pleural effusion 26 were transudative (32.5%) and 54 were exudative (67.5%). In exudative group, 72.2% of cases were CRP positive (1+ to 3+), and in transudative group, only 38.5% of cases were CRP positive (p < 0.05). There was no significant differences between different exudative pleural effusion etiologies (infectious and non infectious, malignant and non malignant and tuberculosis) and the number of CRP positive cases (p > 0.05). The rate of CRP positivity in exudative pleural effusion group was more than transudative group (p < 0.05).

Conclusion: According to our study it seems that CRP criterion could help in distinction between exudative and transudative types of pleural effusion.

Abstract

Hydatid disease infection in humans is caused by larva of Echinococcus granulosus. Definitive hosts are carnivores such as dogs, while intermediate hosts are herbivores. Humans can also be intermediate hosts. Hydatid disease is clinically related to the presence of cysts, most frequently in the liver and the lungs and less frequently in the other organs such as kidney, spleen, brain, heart and bone. In this article, a case of splenic hydatid cyst is reported. A 50-years-old man was admitted to the clinic with a abdominal pain lasting for two weeks. Sonography and computed tomography (CT) scan revealed a splenic cyst. Cyst was removed by a surgery. The diagnosis of a hydatid cyst was confirmed by histopathology.

Abstract

Background & objectives: Hydaticosis is a zoonotic helminthic disease of human and other intermediated hosts in which larval stages of the tapeworm Echinococcus granulosu transfect human. The liver and lung are the host tissues for the hydatid cyst . It is unknown which mechanisms are involved in infertility of the cyst and suppression of the fertile cyst. This study was aimed to evaluate the expression of the apoptosis inducing-ligands such as TRAIL and Fas-L in germinal layer of the cyst and human normal tissue surrounding the cyst that is one of the unknown host innate immunity mechanisms against the hydatid cyst.

Methods: In this study, four isolated hydatid cysts were used which had been diagnosed in patients by radiography and parasitological examination in Mashhad Ghaem hospital. Furthermore, the germinal layer of the cyst and accompanied normal peripheral tissues were separated by scalpel in sterile conditions. After homogenization, expression of TRAIL and Fas-L genes were studied by semi-quantitive RT-PCR method.

Results: The TRAIL and Fas-L showed significant higher level expression in germinal layer of infertile cyst than the fertile cyst and host normal tissues.

Conclusion: The host tissue-induced apoptosis of germinal layer of the fertile cysts is probably one of the infertility mechanism in patients with hydaticosis

Abstract

Background & Objectives: Epidemiological and experimental evidences suggest that oxidative stress is elevated in children with Down syndrome (DS). Some studies show that consumption of diets with a high content of fruits and vegetables results in a significant reduction in markers of oxidative stress. We investigated the frequency of fruits and vegetables intake in children with DS and the influence of variations in the level of this consumption on biomarkers of oxidative stress .

Methods: Frequency of consumption of fruit and vegetables by children with DS were recorded by interview with the children’s parents. Serum malondialdehyde (MDA) and urinary 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) were also measured as biomarkers of oxidative stress. Data analysed using ANOVA and Student’s t-tests .

Results : Mean consumption of fruits and vegetables was 4.6 and 0.74 servings per week, respectively. No significant relationships were found between consumption of fruits and vegetables with markers of oxidative stress. Based on our findings, the 65.9 % of the children did not eat any vegetables and the rest of the children consumed less than one serving per day. There was a significant correlation between the frequency of fruits and vegetable consumption (r=0.212 p <0.04).

Conclusion : There wasn’t any significant relationship between fruits and vegetables consumption and indicators of oxidative stress in children with DS. This lack of correlation could be due to low consumption of fruits and vegetables in children with DS.

Background &objectives: Echinococcosis, referred to as hydatid disease or hydatidosis, is a parasitic disease caused by larval stage of Echinococcus granulosus. In the life cycle of this parasite, dogs and other carnivores are definitive hosts and herbivores are intermediate hosts. Humansin this cycle may incidentally involve by ingestion of parasite eggs and play as intermediate host. Hydatid disease can involve any organ but liver and lung are the most commonly affected organs and kidney, brain, heart, bone may also be affected to a lesser degrees. Cerebral hydatid cyst occurs in about 2% of all echinococcosis cases. In this paper we report two cases of cerebral echinococcosis in whom diagnoses were made based on MRI findings and confirmed by pathology reports after surgery.

First Case Report: The first case was a 30 years old man who was admitted after an episode of generalized tonic-clonicseizure. The MRI imaging performedand patient underwent surgery with diagnosis of a right frontal cystic lesion. The patient was improved progressively and there was no seizure attack and recurrence during 18 months follow up period.

Second Case Report: The second case was a 28 years old woman presented by headache and abnormal behavior. MRI of this patient revealed a large cystic lesion in left frontal lobe and then underwent surgery. No complication was seen during postoperative period. The headache and behavioral disorder were improved completely and there was no sign of recurrence during 18 months follow up period.

Conclusion: Hydatid cyst should be considered as a differential diagnosis of cystic brain lesions in endemic areas. Although hydatid cyst is a benign lesion but surgical removal of it without rupture is very important for prevention of probable future complications.

Abstract

Background & objectives: The “redox” state represents the oxidation/reduction potential within the cell in a way that more “redox” is the marker of health, while the more oxidized reflects predisposition to diseases. Different types of exercise training may change the thiol/disulfide ratio of redox couples such as glutathione and represent a shift in redox balance. This study was assessed the influence of high-intensity aerobic exercise on glutathione redox state in red blood cells in professional, recreational athletes and nonathletes.

Methods: Ten voluntary well trained (WT), moderately trained (MT) and untrained men subjectswere randomly selected for this semi-experimental study (mean ages of 21.10±1.72 21.70±1.88 and 20.10±1.44, respectively). Blood samples were collected before, immediately, 10 min and 30 min after acute aerobic exercise with 75%VO2max. The levels of reduced glutathione (GSH), oxidized glutathione (GSSG) and (GSH/GSSG) in red blood cells (RBCs) as well as serum levels of cortisol and creatine kinase (CK) were measured.

Results: The results showed reduction, elevation and no changes in RBCs GSH/GSSG ratio in UT, MT and WT groups, respectively. The lowest levels of GSH/GSSG ratio in RBCs and the highest one were detected in the WT and MT groups, respectively. The serum levels of cortisol and creatine kinase were increased following the exercise in three groups.

Conclusion: It is concluded that acute aerobic exercise with high intensity does not change redox balance in well trained subjects, however it is capable to shift redox balance towards more reducing environment in moderately trained subjects and also to more oxidizing one in untrained subjects.

Abstract

Background & objectives: Diazinon (DZN) as an organophosphate pesticide widely used in agriculture is associated with reducing the antioxidant capacity of the cell. Use of thiol compounds such as N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) as an antioxidant decreases oxidative stress in the cells. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of NAC as an antioxidant against DZN- induced oxidative stress in rat brain and heart.

Methods: In present experimental study, male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups including: control group (corn oil as DZN solvent), DZN group (100 mg/kg), NAC group (160 mg/kg), and NAC+DZN, all of which were given intraperitoneally. 24 hours after injection, animals were anesthetized by ether, and the brain and heart tissues were quickly removed. After tissues hemogenation, superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT), glutathione S-transferase (GST) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) activities, as well as glutathione (GSH) and malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were determined by biochemical methods.
Results: DZN increased SOD and GST activities and MDA level and decreased LDH activity and GSH content in brain and heart. Also, DZN increased CAT activity in the heart and increased it in the brain. Administration of NAC inhibited the change in these parameters.
Conclusion: DZN through free radical production leads to enhanced membrane lipid peroxidation, depleted GSH content and oxidative stress induction in the brain and the heart. Administration of NAC as antioxidant decreases the DZN-induced oxidative stress by scavenging free radicals and GSH synthesis, but its protection is not complete.
