Abstract
Background & Objective : Regional anesthesia is a method of choice in cesarean section. But in emergency cesarean sections general anesthesia is usually preferred. On the other hand, intravenous sedative drugs used in general anesthesia induction rapidly crosses the placenta and result in fetal depression. Because of higher prevalence of general anesthesia in Iran it is reasonable to conduct more researches in this field. This study set out to compare the effects of Propofol and Thiopental-Na as induction agents on the neonatal Apgar score and maternal hemodynamic status. Methods: In this double blind clinical trial 60 pregnant women with ASA class I & II were studied. In a random way 30 patients received 2mg/kg Propofol and the rest of them were given 4mg/kg of Thiopental-Na. All these subjects had full term and normal fetus. Pre and post-induction status of the patients was monitored noninvasively after tracheal intubations and during 12 minutes after that. Also time intervals between induction and birth (cord clipping) and between uterus incision and birth were measured. Apgar score of neonates was evaluated through clinical examination in 1st, 5th, 10th and 15th minutes after birth. The data were analyzed in SPSS software using descriptive and analytical statistics such as T-test, chi-square and ANOVA. Results: Apgar score in different times (1.5,10&15 minute) had no significant difference between two groups. (In the 1st minute Propofol was 7.1 ± 2.2 and Thiopental was 74 ± 1.8, in the 5th minute Propofol was 9.2 ± 0.7 and Thiopental was 9.1 ± 0.9) Maximum variation of heart rate and blood pressure in two groups were not significantly different. The time intervals between induction and birth (less than 8 minutes) on the one hand and uterus incision and birth(less than 130 seconds) on the other were similar in two groups. Conclusions : Thiopental-Na and Propofol can be used with similar results for induction of general anesthesia in cesarean section.

Abstract
Background & Objectives: Leptin is a hormone secreted from adipocyte tissue with established role in the differentiation and proliferation of hematopoietic cells. This hormone has major impact on fat metabolism. LIF is a pleiotropic cytokine with extensive hematopoietic, neuronal, and endocrine actions. LIF and IL-6 are leading to decreased level of leptin by activating signaling via their own receptors. Body mass index (BMI) has a direct connection with the leptin. It seems that Hb and HCT levels are also implicated in disease prognosis. This study was conducted to evaluate leptin, LIF and IL-6 serum levels and also to measure the amounts of BMI, Hb and HCT in lymphoid leukemia patients . Methods: The study was carried out on 30 leukemia patients (15 cases ALL and 15 cases CLL). Fifteen healthy subjects were considered as control. Serum levels of leptin, LIF and IL-6 were measured by ELISA. BMI was calculated by statistical formula. The amount of Hb and HCT were measured by cell counter. Data was analyzed by SPSS software. Statistical differences between groups were assessed by t test, and p<0.05 was considered significant. Results: Leptin serum level showed a decrease in ALL patients (p<0.002), but there was an increase in CLL patients when comparing with control group (p<0.003). BMI and serum levels of leptin, LIF and IL-6 were showed a significant decrease in ALL patients in comparison with control group (p<0.05). Although, LIF serum levels and BMI in CLL patients showed a decrease, a significant increase in leptin serum level was observed (p<0.05). A decrease in IL-6 level was also observed which was not significant. The relation between BMI and leptin serum level in ALL and CLL patients were not significant, nevertheless it was significant in control group (p<0.05). Hb and HCT levels in both ALL and CLL patients showed a significant decrease (p <0.05). Conclusion: Findings on serum levels of LIF, IL-6, Leptin, Hb and HCT and also its relations with BMI in ALL and CLL patients suggest that, these factors may have important role in physiopathology of lymphoid leukemia.

Abstract
Background & Objectives: Several evidences show that oxidative stress is high among patients with hemodialysis . This study was aimed to investigate the oxidative stress and serum level of zinc and copper in patients with non-diabetic hemodialysis . Methods: In a case-control study, 60 patients with non-diabetic hemdialysis referred to hemodialysis section, Ardabil Bou-Ali hospital, and 60 healthy individuals, matched by age and sex, were selected. In each group, lipid profile, blood glucose, creatinine, urea, total protein, albumin, zinc, copper, malondialdehyde, total antioxidant capacity, activity of glutathione peroxidase and superoxide dismutase were measured. The results were analyzed statistically by using Pearson correlation coefficient and Student-t test. Results: The amount of zinc, blood sugar, cholesterol, triglyceride, total protein, albumin, high density lipoprotein-C and low density lipoprotein-C were significantly lower in patients with hemodialysis in comparison with those in normal individuals. T he activity of superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase in red blood cells and serum total antioxidant capacity were significantly high in patients in comparison with those in control group. However, serum concentrations of copper and malondialdehyde in two groups were not statistically different. Conclusion : The results of this study show that increase of antioxidant enzymes activity reduces the oxidative stress status in patients with non-diabetic hemodialysis . Zinc deficiency was also observed in these patients.

Abstract
Background & Objectives : Cortical spreading depression (SD), a self-propagating depolarization of neuroglial cells, is believed to play a role in different neurological disorders including epilepsy and migraine aura. A brief period of excitation heralds SD which is immediately followed by nerve cell depression and later by prolonged excitation. The aim of the present study was to investigate relationship between SD and late phase of excitability and seizure burst activity inlateral amygdale of rat. Methods: Male Wistar rats with 250-350 gram body weight were used. We usedamygdale slices taken from Wistar rats. SD was induced by KCl. After superfusion of these slices with sub-epileptic concentration of bicuculline for 45 min, the induction of SD in the lateral amygdale resulted in presence of interictal and ictalepileptiform field potentials. Results: After initiation of SD in lateral amygdale, glutamate receptors (NMDA, AMPA) antagonists as well as K+ and Ca++ channels blockers were able to decrease the amplitude of excitatory postsynaptic potentials. Conclusion: The results imply a possible role for SD in temporal lobe epilepsy in predisposed neural tissue with increased excitation or decreased inhibition. The study of the late phase of SD excitability may help us to understand the mechanism of SD action in associated neurological disorders. This finding may improve the therapeutic strategies for treatment of epilepsy.

Abstract
Background & objectives: The purpose of this study was to show the dose response relationship of anti-inflammatory effect of methylsulfonylmethane (MSM) on carrageenan induced rat paw edema as an acute model of inflammation.
Methods: A total of 54 male, Sprague-Dawley rats, weighing 180-190 g, were used. One hundred, 200, 400, 800 and 1200 mg/kg of MSM were administered intraperitoneally to the rats 30 minutes before induction of paw edema with injection of 0.1% carrageenan. Diclofenac was used as a control drug. Rats were divided into three groups: MSM, diclofenac and normal saline, and their paw tissue were collected for the study of inflammatory and oxidative markers (MDA, GSH, TNF-α and IL-1 β). The relationship between the different concentrations of MSM and decrease in rat paw edema was calculated using a simple Emax model.
Results: the ED50 value for effect of MSM on carrageenan induced rat paw edema was 193±9.7 mg/kg. A significant reduction in paw edema following administration of MSM at 200, 400, 800 and 1200 mg/kg was observed, but statistical analysis did not reveal any significant reduction in paw edema after administration of 100 mg/kg. MSM did not show statistically significant difference from control group in tissue level of GSH, but it was able to decrease MDA level significantly. MSM was able to significantly alleviate IL-1 β and TNF-alpha tissue levels.
Conclusion: The recommended anti-inflammatory dosing range of MSM is 200-800 mg/kg for pharmacological studies in rats and the average appropriate dose is 400 mg/kg. Also, it seems that anti-inflammatory effect of MSM is more profound than its anti-oxidant effects.
